Heart Pulse Sensor Using Arduino
Monitoring heart rate is main device for athlete’s patients as it control the condition of the heart. There are countless ways to measure heart rate and the most accurate one is Electrocardiography.
But the effortless way to monitor the heart rate is to use a Heartbeat Sensor. It is available in different shapes and sizes and allows a rapid way to measure the heartbeat.
Now a day’s Heartbeat Sensors are available in Wrist Watches, Smart Phones, chest straps, etc. The heartbeat is considered in beats per minute which indicates the number of times the heart is shrink or expanding in a minute.
Pin Configuration
Pin No. | Pin Name | Wire Colour | Description |
1 | Ground | Black | Connect the ground to the system. |
2 | Vcc | Red | Connect 5V to power supply |
3 | Signal | Purple | Pulsating output signal |
Principle of Heartbeat Sensor
- The principle beyond the working of the Heartbeat Sensor is Photoplethysmograph (PPG). Just as the changes in the volume of blood is measured by the changes in the strength of the light going through that organ.
- Mostly, the origin of light in a heartbeat sensor would be an infrared light and the tracker would be any Photo Detector like a Photo Transistor.
- With these two i.e. a light source and a tracker, we can order them in two ways: A Transmissive Sensor and a Reflective Sensor.
- in a Transmissive Sensor, the light source and the detector are kept each other and the finger of the person must be put in between the transmitter and receiver.
- Reflective Sensor has the light source and the tracker adjoining to each other and the finger of the person must be kept in front of the sensor.
Component Required
- Arduino
- Heartbeat Sensor
- Potentiometer
- Voltmeter
- Virtual terminal
- microcontroller
Explanation of circuit diagram
The circuit design of Arduino based Heart beat Sensor is very simple. First, in order to show the heartbeat readings in bpm, we have to attach a virtual terminal with Arduino Pins 1. Also, a 1KΩ Potentiometer is connected to test point of heartbeat sensor. Next, join the output of the Heartbeat Sensor to the Input Pin of Arduino. Also connect a Voltmeter to display the result easily.
Working
Enter the code to Arduino and Power on the system. The Arduino request us to place our finger in the sensor and then press the switch.
Place any finger in the sensor clip and push the button, Arduino measures the heart rate and shows the heartbeat in bpm.
While the sensor is saving the data, do not shake the wire as the result we can see the value.
After the result is displayed on the screen, if you want to execute another test, just push the rest button on the Arduino and start the method once again.
Application
- Sleep tracing
- Remote patient monitoring
- Health bands
- Concern monitoring
So this is it. I hope you consider this guide useful. Let me know if you required any help with its projects. Will meets you guys next time. Till then take care, have more fun.
