For this tutorial you will need the following things.

Setting up the Raspberry Pi os

To use the Raspberry Pi an operating system has to be installed in it. In order to install the operating system in the Raspberry Pi 3 you need a micro SD card with a minimum capacity of 8 GB. Then NOOBS (New Out Of Box Software) which is an operating system installation manager is downloaded and saved in the SD card. The SD card is then inserted in the slot at the bottom of the Raspberry Pi. Then keyboard, mouse and a monitor is connected to the Raspberry Pi to install the Operating System. Raspbian is the official operating system for all Raspberry Pi models. Now this installation is discussed in detail step by step.

1 Downloading NOOBS for Raspberry Pi :

NOOBS is an Operating System(raspberry pi os) installation manager i.e. in order to install the Operating System in the Raspberry Pi you need NOOBS. NOOBS is easy to use and preloaded with Raspbian. SD Cards with preinstalled NOOBS are easily available in the Market. In case you do not have NOOBS installed in your micro SD Card read this section to know how to download the NOOBS(Setting up the Raspberry Pi os).

To download the NOOBS enter the following URL:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/noobs/

A window will appear and you will see two options for downloading the NOOBS i.e.

  • 1) NOOBS and
  • 2) NOOBS Lite

I recommend you to download the NOOBS. NOOBS has pre-loaded Raspbian so after the installation of the NOOBS there is no need to connect your Raspberry Pi over internet and you can continue installing the Raspbian offline.

Click on the  to downlad the zip file. Now extract the zip file and download is completed.

2 Formatting the SD card:

3 Copying the NOOBS file into SD Card:

After NOOBS files has been extracted and SD card has been formatted copy the NOOBS extracted files folder into the SD card via SD card Reader. When copying is completed pull out the SD card and gently insert it into the slot at the bottom of the Raspberry Pi.

4 Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor:

In order to enter the commands and see the output of the Raspberry Pi connect the keyboard and mouse via USB ports and connect the monitor via HDMI port

HDMI cable looks like this.

If your monitor is not supported by HDMI you can use adapter to connect monitor to Raspberry Pi HDMI port.

5)   First Boot:

After you plug in the mouse, keyboard and monitor to Raspberry Pi power up the Raspberry Pi and insert the micro SD card with the NOOBS installed. First boot of the Raspberry Pi starts and a dialog box will appear on the screen of the monitor asking you to select the Operating System to be installed on the Raspberry Pi. Check the box before the Raspbian which is the recommended Operating System for the Raspberry Pi. After some time Operating System will get installed on your Raspberry Pi.

  • Set time and Date:

After the Raspbian has been installed your Raspberry Pi is ready to use. Set the time and date according to your country by selecting the icon at the top left corner of your monitor.
