GSM STAND FOR
GSM STAND FOR Global System for mobile communication .Global System for mobile communication is basically the standard that is designed and developed in order to enable the wireless communications between the mobile devices such as cellular phones and tablets. The GSM is the protocol that defines the communication method by using the electromagnetic waves as the medium for propagation of the message. So speaking broadly the GSM provides the particular way of transmitting and receiving the messages to and from the mobile devices. GSM enabled networks supports full duplex communication which means that the communication can be obtained in both directions that is from sender to the receiver and from receiver to the sender. GSM is available in wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum depending upon the technology.

As we learned in the above section that the GSM is the protocol that defines the way of sending and receiving messages wirelessly so there should be some hardware that supports this type of communication. The device that is based on GSM is called the GSM model or GSM module. The GSM modem come integrated on mobile phones that enable the phones to communicate wirelessly under this GSM network. In the similar way the GSM modems comes also with USB interface to let them connected to the computers or laptops thus enabling the GSM wireless networks on the computers or laptops. The GSM modem has the slot on which the SIM card resides. A GSM modem can supports GSM networks of multiple frequencies.
Besides these GSM modems the hardware for GSM communications to be used in the embedded systems projects is also in market and is usually called GSM module. The GSM module used in embedded systems looks like the one in the following image:
As shown in the above image that the GSM module has only limited number of pins. The interface employed in the GSM module shown above is quite simple that is the interface is simply Tx and Rx pins. It is important to note here that some GSM modules are also available that supports RS 232 communication. The SIM card will be placed inside the GSM module on the SIM slot with the help of which the GSM module will have the wireless connectivity to other phones over the GSM network.[otw_is sidebar=otw-sidebar-3]
